ACTIVITIES OF THE IMPERIAL ARCHAEOLOGICAL COMMISSION IN THE SOUTH-EASTERN PART OF THE SOUTH CAUCASUS

Abstract

The Imperial Archaeological Commission carried out archaeological excavations and research in the South-Eastern part of the South Caucasus during the second half of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries with the help of Russian and European amateurs and scientists. Discovered here valuable finds were sent to the Imperial Hermitage, the Imperial Russian Historical Museum, the Imperial St. Petersburg, Kharkov and Warsaw Universities, the Archaeological Institute, the Imperial Russian Archaeological Society, the Institute of Oriental Languages, the Asian, Caucasian, Tiflis, Riga, Tashkent, Kiev, Kherson, Odessa museums, other findings were destroyed. The establishment and development of National Azerbaijan archaeology, the creation of the National Museum of the History of Azerbaijan and the history-ethnographic museums in the country laid the foundation for deep scientific and archeological research of the region's history and culture.
