Abstract

Houses and yards which were the essential part of material culture of Baku between the XIX and thee earlier XX have been studied in the article. Baku was so rapidly developing that time that the capitalist relations of economy were completely felt in the city’s image. Notwithstanding the Old Baku was still mainly in Ichari-sheher in the earlier XIX century, the new residential areas were being established due to the growth of its oil industry. Those residential areas, particularly, inhabited with workmen and craftsmen were populating over the castle walls. Though they were still called “mahalla” – a yard in the spoken language of people, their outside views were extremely different from the ancient, one-storey houses (“tagh ev”) on narrow streets. So, houses and yards occupying the important places in the material culture of Baku and reflecting the real view of it were studied by the author with some comments added.
