Abstract

The origin of polysemous words in the Azerbaijani and Uzbek Turkic languages dates back to very ancient times, and the amount of such lexical units in both related languages quantitatively constitutes a majority. This thought implies that polysemy is a historical category. Historically, there have also been secondary meaning postulates that have led to the emergence of polysemy in addition to the primary semantics of a word. The additional meanings derived from the original meaning of words in the language are studied and analyzed under the polysemic category. Polysemy has formed through the differentiation of words, including phenomena such as homonymy, synonymy, and metaphorization in Oghuz-origin Azerbaijani and Karluk-Uyghur-origin Uzbek Turkic languages. The development patterns of polysemous words, which occupy a special place in the lexical-semantic systems of these related languages is discussed in the article. It extensively deals with the practical ways of expanding the semantic fields of lexical units and presents comparisons and parallels.
