Artificial intelligence (AI) is habitually related to the development of computer systems capable of performing tasks that typically require human intelligence. The newest and proved methods, techniques, and means of all scientific fields are involved in the formation of AI science.
Dialectology is the field of science that studies the dialects of a language being in different geographical and social conditions in linguistics. Dialectology has especially advanced through traditional methods – field research, interviews with the local informants, and the collection of both written and oral examples. However, these methods are usually the processes time-consuming and resource-intensive. Furthermore, some dialects are preserved solely in oral form, and the lack of written documentation complicates the preservation of dialects. The application of artificial intelligence has introduced new possibilities within the field of dialectology for the aim of eliminating these problems. The fundamental methods of AI, particularly natural language processing has facilitated the analysis and comparison of dialects.
Each dialect differs from with its unique phonological, morphological, syntactic, and semantic features, and these features reflect the natural evolution of the language. In recent years, the development of AI has caused significant changes in the field of linguistics, particularly in the field of dialectology. The impressive AI algorithms and deep learning techniques have accelerated linguistic analysis, and made the study and preservation of dialects more accessible.
How artificial intelligence can be applied in dialectology, the opportunities it provides for the preservation and development of dialects, and the theoretical and practical issues related to the future of dialects will be discussed in this article.
The role of AI in preserving dialects is substantial. This technology contributes to the transmission of language and culture to future generations and supports the protection and evolution of linguistic diversity. The joint development of dialectology and artificial intelligence offers a means to safeguard the richness and diversity of language, and it is anticipated that further innovations in this field will emerge in the future.
