AZERBAIJANIAN CRAFT OF SOCKS WEAVING

Abstract

The article is devoted to one of the traditional crafts - the weaving of socks. Weaving was one of the most important handicraft industries in Azerbaijan. The history of knitting socks is studied, information about its technology is given. The history of sock knitting has been studied, information about its technology has been given. The ethnographic originality of staining, color and pattern of socks has been studied. In the course of the study, materials from the Ethnography fund of the National Museum of the History of Azerbaijan were used, and a comparative analysis was carried out. So, samples of socks from different regions, available in a rich collection, were selected. A comparison was made of the ornaments of carpets with patterns of socks stored in the fund. Information is given about the place of weaving socks, which constitutes a significant proportion of women's domestic work, in their household activities. It should be borne in mind that
the craft of weaving socks, which were elements of clothing used throughout the year, was a necessary occupation for women. The people had customs and traditions associated with socks. In addition, the beliefs associated with the pattern are reflected in their color and design. These ideas, historically dating back to carpet weaving, spread over time to other weaving products, including socks. As a result, we come to the conclusion that thanks to weaving, which was an important household activity, women passed on ancient beliefs and traditions to subsequent generations. Although now the traditions of preparing raw materials in the craft of weaving socks have practically disappeared, ethnographic studies allow us to conclude that the art of weaving socks in many regions of Azerbaijan is still an everyday occupation of women.
