        Abstract

Nylon polymers are widely used in both advanced engineering, including materials used in the medical and aerospace industries, and in simple consumer products such as carpets, furniture, adhesives and clothing. Polymers and therefore their monomers and intermediates therefore play an important role in our everyday lives. It is known that most monomers are currently produced from fossil resources. In this review, we have examined the history of the nylon industry, examined strategies and catalytic processes for producing potentially new and currently used intermediates and monomers, and suggested possible future developments. The probability of conversion in the appropriate pathway from renewable bio-raw materials and platform chemicals was considered. The pathway for the production of nylon from levulinic acid is comprehensively described. Methyl-4 pentenoate has been evaluated as a key intermediate for nylon production.
