After the world-famous oil and gas field of Productive series, the Miocene deposits of Azerbaijan are the most promising. The industrial oil and gas potential of the Maikop and Chokrak deposits of the Chandagar-Zarat, Siazan-Nardaran, Saadan, etc. areas of NE Azerbaijan and Umbaki Square of Gobustan OGB is already known. The Karagan-Konk and Sarmatian deposits of the Miocene are also considered promising for oil and gas. Along with this, the Miocene deposits also contain other minerals, the industrial extraction of which contributes to the development of the oil sector of the Azerbaijani industry. These are deposits of
quartz sandstones from the Chokrak deposits of the NE Azerbaijan – Gilgilchai, Chagajukchai and Velvelechai areas, the quantitative content of which in some places reaches 87%. Based on the above, the study of the fauna and stratigraphy of Miocene deposits is becoming one of the urgent issues of our time. The article presents information about the history and current state of biostratigraphy of Miocene deposits, the study of micro- and macrofauna complexes of the Shamakhi-Gobustan OGB.
