Abstract

The protection of religious architectural monuments in Nakhchivan is carried out based on the laws of the Republic of Azerbaijan. These laws aim to protect and restore the monuments, but in practice, there are several challenges. The lack of expert oversight in the restoration and repair of religious architectural monuments, particularly mosques and shrines, negatively affects the quality of the work. The absence of a unified concept in restoration work, along with the involvement of non-professional specialists, leads to the improper restoration of the monuments. In such cases, the monuments may lose their historical and cultural significance and original form. Therefore, it is crucial to increase the role of professional architects and conservators in the restoration process of religious architectural monuments. The restoration work should be carried out only under expert supervision, and the restoration efforts must comply with relevant international standards. Additionally, it is important to establish a unified concept in this field and create a clear plan for the restoration of monuments that aligns with historical values. The religious monuments of Nakhchivan are not only part of the local population's heritage but also of Azerbaijan’s and the international community's cultural heritage. Protecting these monuments requires serious and systematic approaches to ensure their accurate and complete transmission to future generations. Only through professional approaches and the application of relevant expert evaluations can these monuments preserve their historical value and remain as cultural heritage that anyone can visit in the future.
