The article deals with the ethnogeographic settlement of one of the oldest tribes in the Caucasus - the Khazara and the etymology of the Khazar/Caspian Sea, named after this tribe. An analysis of the sources confirms the Khazars’ kinship with the Sakas and Scythians.
Historically and geographically established in the world, the hydronym "Caspian Sea" in ancient times had several other names. Mainly these names were associated with coastal tribes, such as Khazars. But Khazar was only one of those terms that the sea was named, there also were others Hirkan (modern Iran and Turkmenistan), Khazar (Azerbaijan, Dagestan), Albanian (Azerbaijan), Scythian Sea (north of the Caspian Sea). The Khazars are one of the oldest ethnic groups in the Caucasus. By virtue of their settlement, the Khazars participated in the ethnogenesis of the peoples of Azerbaijan, Dagestan, the coastal peoples of South Azerbaijan, possibly, partly Georgians. The history of this tribe is traced up to the end of the 7th century AD. contrary to Strabo's statement about his disappearance at the turn of the first two centuries.
