Rules

The Azerbaijani Astronomical Journal (AzAJ) is a publication of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences. The journal accepts articles on all branches of astronomy and astrophysics from all over the world. The publication of an article in AzAJ is free, on the condition that there is free access to the electronic versions of the issues of the journal. The AzAJ is published in a limited number print form and also in electronic format which is posting on web page dergipark.anas.az/index.php/ajaz/user

The journal is published in English 2 issues in year. The journal is included to the list of recommended scientific journals of the Supreme Attestation Commission of Azerbaijan, and there is access to articles in the NASA ADS database. Issue indexes of the journal is ISSN 2078-4163 (Print), 2078-4171 (Online).

Authors are required to compile the manuscript according to the following rules in order to submit the article to AzAJ journal. Manuscripts not compiled in accordance with these rules shall not be registered in the editorial office and shall not be accepted for publication. The article should be sent to the editors in electronic form, in a special archived folder. The folder should contain the main file containing the text of the article, as well as separate files, with tables and figures. Tables and figures should be placed in the main text of the article as in the print version.

Articles undergo two stages of review, after a positive review they are recommended for publication.

1. Compilation of the article

1.1. It is recommended to send the electronic version of the main text of the article in Latex (Tex) format. In this case, the tex file of the article, the compiled pdf version and the images must be in the form of separate files in the folder sent to the editors. This will speed up the publication of the article. The editorial office also accepts the article in MS Word format together with a PDF version and separate files with images.

1.2. It is recommended to use the "style" file prepared by the editors when compiling the article in tex format. The Style file can be downloaded from a special Sample folder in the lower left corner of the page at aaj.shao.az.

1.3. The text of the article should be typed in English with Caliber (11pt) font, with an interval of 1.2. The article should be carefully edited, all pages should be numbered.

1.4. Title of the article; authors; full name and address of the enterprise where the research is conducted; a brief summary should be given. Abbreviated names and references should not be included in the summary. The e-mail address of the author corresponding with the editorial office must be indicated. Then the keywords are placed. Keywords must meet the standards of leading international journals (MNRAS, A&A, ApJ) and be taken from the following website: (https://static.primary.prod.gcms.the-infra.com/static/All+Journals/)

1.5. Sections of the article should be numbered from beginning to end in Arabic numerals. There may be several subsections within each section. Sections should be numbered with simple numbers (1,2,…, 5), and subsections should be numbered with double numbers (1.1, 1.2,…, 1.5). Acknowledgments must be given at the end of the text. References should be given under the heading "References".

1.6. A maximum of 6 key words should be listed after the abstract. These must be selected from a list that is published each year. This list is common to the major astronomical and astrophysical journals. List of key words: https://www.aanda.org/for-authors/latex-issues/information-files#pop.

1.7. The name of the table must be written after its number. Illustrations and tables should be numbered in Arabic numerals.

The page limit volume of the articles in the journal is accepted for short reports 6, for ordinary articles 12, and for review articles to 16 pages.

Note. Articles in the journal are fixed from the day of receipt in the editorial office and published in the order after the review.

In special cases, articles to be expedited for publication are considered by the editorial board after the official letter.

2. General recommendations

2.1. All abbreviations (abbreviated words) presented in the text first time must be presented in open form.

2.2. Only the letters of the Latin and Greek alphabets should be used in the formulas.

2.3. Vector quantities should be in bold ( E , B, c, d ), and scalar quantities should be in italic letters( UBV, n, T, g ).

2.4. Mathematical symbols, chemical elements, and other symbols, such as sin, lim, log, max, exp, are collected in simple fonts.

2.5. Numbers with decimal fractions should be indicated by dots, not commas (0.37 instead of 0.37)

2.6. Simple formulas (a 2 + b 2 = c 2 ) and chemical formulas (H2SO4 ) should be assembled in plain text without the use of programs such as Equation or MathType. 2.7. No dot is placed after the title of the article, the names and addresses of the authors, headings, subheadings, units of measurement (sec (s), grams (g), etc.).

3. References

3.1. AzAJ, in common with other journals in astronomy, uses the Harvard style– i.e. author (year) – referencing style. References should be cited in text by the last name of the author(s) and the date of publication: one author (Bahsirova 2024), two authors (Ismailov and Adigozalzade 2018), 3 or more authors ‒ first author last name and et al. (Abdullayev et al. 2013).

The reference list must be present at the end of text and should contain all the references cited in the text, ordered alphabetically by surname (with initials following). If there are several references to the same first author, they should be entered according to the following scheme:

One author: chronologically,

Author, one co-author: alphabetically by co-author, then chronologically,

Author, two or more co-authors: chronologically.

The first three author's names are given, followed by "et al.", for papers written by a group of more than five authors.

Papers in preparation (not yet submitted to a journal) are not to be displayed in the reference list and are to be listed as "in prep." in the main text, without any date.

Private communications are not listed either and may be acknowledged as "YYYY, priv. comm." in the main text.

For papers submitted to a journal that are not yet published, please give the year of submission/ acceptation, the name of the journal, and its status: submitted (not yet accepted), or in press. Citations should only mention the year given in the reference.

The AzAJ format for references is as follows:

Bohr, N., Einstein, A., & Fermi, E. 1992, MNRAS, 301, 257 (BEF)

Curie, M., & Curie, P. 1991, A&A, 248, 612

de Gaulle, C. 1996, Solar Phys. (Oxford Univ. Press, Oxford)

Heisenberg, W., & West, C. N. 1993, Australian J. Phys., 537, 36 (Paper III)

Laurel, S., & Hardy, O. 1994, Active Galactic Nuclei, in The Evolution and Distribution of Galaxies, ed. W. Churchill, F. D. Roosevelt, & J. Stalin (Wiley, New York), 210

To set the reference list in the proper AzAJ format, we encourage you to use BibTeX and the natbib package instead of the standard thebibliography environment.

3.2. All references must be given in the language in which they are published and are strictly numbered in the order in which they appear in the text. If there is an English version of the publication, a reference must be made to that version.

3.3. The title of journal in which the cited work is published should be abbreviated as the standard presented on the NASA ADS website (eg Astrophysical Journal-ApJ, Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society-MNRAS, Astronomy and Astrophysics - A&A, Annual Review of Astronomy and Astrophysics-ARA&A, Azerbaijani Astronomical Journal -AzAJ, Astronomicheskij Circular - Atsir, etc.). For abbreviated journal titles, please visit: (http://adsabs.harvard.edu/abs_doc/journals1.html).

If any catalogues, databases or scientific software are referred to in the paper, authors should ensure that those responsible for compiling them are properly credited. Rather than citing only a URL, if at all possible a reference should also be cited (and included in the reference list), or if a reference is not available then the names of those who compiled the database, or wrote the software, should be given. Note that some catalogues, databases and software do provide guidelines on how they should be cited - if so then these guidelines should be followed. The reference list should include no bold or italic, no commas after author surnames, and no ampersand between the final two author names. List all of the authors if there are eight or fewer, otherwise give just the first author followed by ‘et al.’. The styles for journal articles, conference proceedings, textbooks and PhD theses are illustrated by the following examples:

  • Ismailov F.I., Dzhalilov N.S., Humbatova  E.E., AzAJ, 19, 23
  • Adigozalzade H.N., Bashirova U.Z, Ismailov N.Z Spectral Varıabılıty of the Herbıg Ae Type Star HD 179218. İntern. Conference OBA Stars: Variability and magnetic fields. St.Peterburg, p.26
  • Felsteiner J., Opher R., 1991, in Treves A., ed., Iron Line Diagnostics in X-ray Sources. Springer-Verlag, Berlin, p. 209
  •  Books: Martynov D.Ya. 1977,  Practical course in astrophysics. Moscow, Nauka, 1977.-544 Strayzhis VL Multicolor photometry of stars. Vilnius, p.310.

3.4. Websites: https://irsa.ipac.caltech.edu/IRASdocs/epsup/

3.5. Tables must be numbered in the order in which they are presented in the text. The number is followed by the name of the table. Parameters and their units of measurement must be indicated in columns of the table.

4. Figures

4.1. Images must be submitted in JPEG, BMP, EPS formats with a resolution of 600 dpi. Photos must be provided with a resolution of 300 dpi.

4.2. Images must be clear and concretic. Images can be submitted in both black- white format and in color format. Below the figures must be presented a brief description.

4.3. If the picture consists of several parts (panels), each panel can be numbered alphabetically (for example, 1a, 1b, etc.). In this case, the explanation of each panel should be given in the common description.

4.4. The axes of the graphs should show the quantities and their units of measurement. For example, RV (km/s), T (K), 10 -13 erg cm -2 s -1 Å -1 .

4.5. The optimal thickness of the arrows in the graph should be 1.5 pt, the thickness of the drawn curves should be 1.0 pt. It is recommended that the graph be framed and that the scale on the arrows be displayed on the right and left, bottom and top edges of the image.

4.6. The dimensions of the numbers on the scale of the arrows should be chosen so that the numbers and inscriptions do not overlap and they must be read easily. The font size on the arrows should be at least 14-16 pt.

4.7. Images should not be loaded with different text, should be simple and clear, all other information should be given in the caption or text.
