          Abstract

An analytical study presents the physical phenomena occurring in superdense stars, with particular attention to the structure and properties of the crystalline crust. Numerical estimates of the density and lattice parameters of matter in the crust are provided. It is shown that under extreme conditions of density, as realized in compact stellar objects, the matter forms a degenerate electron gas whose properties are governed by quantum-mechanical principles.
