Abstract

The Tsakhurs were engaged in farming as an subsidiary and economic matter. However, because of the scarcity of arable land in the Tsakhur villages its success was limited. The Tsakhurs grew wheat, barley, millet and garden crops. The main agricultural tool was a plow with 2 oxen harnessed into it. Arable plots located on the land cleared from the forest were not watered; the rest of the arable land is irrigated. They watered the fields with water from springs and mountain rivers. The harvested crop was threshed on the threshing floor and taken to the mill. In every Tsakhur village there were water mills. The Tsakhurs also engaged in vegetable gardening. Usually it was the responsibility of women. Onion, garlic, cucumber, turnip, pepper, corn, beans were cultivated. Horticulturewas developed.
