Abstract

Summary

The article deals with the investigation of cognate objects (CO) used in modern English within the framework of Functional Grammar paradigm. The research of the representatives of Functional Grammar, S. Dik, M. Halliday, as well as S. Kuno and K.Takami on cognate objects is reviewed here.

Functional Grammar is a paradigm which focuses on the social and communicative functions of the language system. This paradigm considers language as “an instrument of social interaction among human beings” [S.Dik] in the first place. Linguistic categories, functions and structures are analysed and described with respect to the communicative and interactional functions they fulfil.
