The role of neologisms in linguistics

Abstract

The term neologism has a broader meaning and includes "a word that has acquired a new meaning". Sometimes, the latter process is called semantic shift or semantic expansion. Neologisms are different from a person's idiolect, unique vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation patterns.
