Abstract

There are a number of words in the Azerbaijani language the place of which in the system of parts of speech cannot be precisely determined. Some of these words and expressions perform the function of a predicate in a sentence, and Professor A. Abdullayev analyzes them under the title "predicatives". This kind of words as an independent sphere in Azerbaijani linguistics have not been studied, therefore this scientist's work can be considered an innovation for Azerbaijani linguistics. Both in Russian and in Azerbaijani linguistics, and in Turkic studies, some words of this type were touched upon superficially, and scholars considered them under the different titles.  A. Abdullayev focuses attention to these scientific views and expresses his attitude to them. On the other hand, in the article the semantic-grammatical features of such predicatives are compared with other parts of speech; the specific peculiarities of predicatives are analyzed, their differences from parts of speech, in particular, from notional parts of speech are revealed.

In the scientist's work it is noted that predicatives are words and expressions that perform the function of a predicate in a sentence, however, not being subject to the corresponding grammatical changes unlike other words. They, one might say, do not require a question of predicate. In some works, such words are not even mentioned and presented as "a predicate that does not require a question." The article presents a semantic classification of predicatives: predicatives denoting:                  1) possibility and necessity; 2) availability and absence; 3) affirmation and negation; 4) comfortable anduncomfortable time; 5) emotional state; 6) greeting and farewell; 7)limitation and essence;                8) question and answer.

Most of the predicatives are predicates, without being subjected to any changes, some of them taking the affix of predicate perform the function of the predicate. Nevertheless, some expressions presented among predicatives are not lexical units and should be considered as syntactic units.
