Summary

The article defines the differences between disambiguation and similar linguistic phenomena (ambiguity and homonymy); approaches to studying the lexical composition of a polysemous word are presented; the mechanisms of realization of the meaning of a polysemous word in the context are studied; Also, an analysis of artistic means of expression was carried out based on the stylistic potential of a polysemous word.

In the article, we will consider the concept of translation as an interlingual activity and the main categories of translation studies as a science: equivalence, adequacy and ways to achieve them in translation. These provisions will be applied during the analysis of practical material, that is: with the help of which methods to achieve equivalence in translation, the stylistic effect of artistic means based on the potential of a polysemous word is given.

The main criteria for evaluating the translation are equivalence and adequacy. Linguists interpret these terms differently and assess their relationship. The article also reviewed different views and approaches to the definition of the concepts of translation equivalence and adequacy.
