Abstract

The Caucasus-Caspian region is an area of complex tectonic structure accompanied by large variations in seismic wave velocities and attenuation. In such areas, accurate geophysical models are fundamentally important to seismic monitoring for two reasons: improved event location and path calibration (critical for accurate estimation of event size and mechanism). In particular, the
great thickness and irregular geometry of the low velocity and low density sediments in the Kura and Caspian sea basins causes profound effects on seismic waveforms, especially on surface waves and regional phases. These effects are compounded by variation in crustal structure in the Caucasusand by high attenuation under the e. Anatolian plateau [3].
