Abstract

Mammad Araz’s creativity is characterized by the juxtaposition of lyrical and epic elements in his poetry. In addition to his lyrical-epic poetry and ballads, the poet has also composed poems that may be considered epic. In those poems, the epic spirit and motifs occupy a leading place, but at the same time, deep lyrical feeling, enthusiasm, and march-like connotation dominate. Although the calls and emotions bring the subject to the fore, by being able to connect the group, society, people, homeland, country himself, “I” becomes the hero of the epic, shows magical, mythical power and joins the multitude. In his poems, the spirit of the epic, the epic memory, and at the same time the epic poem, varsagi, the march, which are considered as separate forms of the epic poem, are synthesized; it is difficult to separate these poetic forms in his work and determine the dominance of one.

The essay elucidates the concept of epic poetry, explores its developmental direction, analyzes Mammad Araz’s epic poems within the framework of tradition and innovation, and poetic memory, and delineates their distinctive characteristics.
