M.F.Akhundzada’s East-West creative synthesis and modernization programme

Abstract

The article traces the direction of the East-West creative synthesis and the modernization programme by M.F.Akhundzada (1811-1878). Akhundzada was a classic author of Azerbaijani literature, who became the first playwright in the history of all Turkic peoples, as well as the Muslim world. He laid the foundations for the Azerbaijani theatre, realist literature, and a new philosophy shaped by the modern European spirit. The article evaluates his professional role in modern innovations by reviewing the independent and original talent of the Azerbaijani playwright. This includes the analysis of the writer-educator Akhundzada’s programme in the novels “Deceived Stars”, and the famous treatise “Letters from Kamal od-Dowleh”. The article studies the worldview and creative evolution of Akhundzada as a progressive writer, designating him as an outstanding thinker of the XIX century. Particular attention is paid to the extensive modernization programme of Akhundzada and the merits of his progressive figure. The global demand for progressive ideas is revealed in the contemporary undertakings of the Azerbaijani enlightener.
