Abstract

The presented article tells about the main moments of the life and multifaceted work of literary scholar, critic, publicist, member of the Azerbaijan Writers Union, Doctor of Philology, Professor Zaman Asgerli (1952-2018). In 1980, Professor Z.Asgerli defended his candidacy on the topic “The tragedy of Najaf bey Vezirov “The Grief of Fakhreddin” and its position in Azerbaijani literary and social thought” and in 1992 defended his doctoral dissertation on the topic “Poetics of the Azerbaijani tragedy”.

Z.Asgerli is the author of such monographs as “The Tragedy of Najaf bey Vezirov “The Grief of Fakhreddin” (1985), “Najaf bey Vezirov” (1998), “Aziz Mirahmedov: The Life of a Scientist” (2000), “The tragedy of “Fakhreddin’s grief” (2003) , “Seyid Azim Shirvani” (2005), “Mirza Shafi Vazeh” (2010), “Bakikhanov-Gudsi” (2015), “Mirza Fatali Akhundzade” (2017), as well as “Poetics: an explanatory dictionary”, numerous textbooks and methodological benefits. He wrote up to 400 articles on the history, theory and poetics of Azerbaijani literature of the 19th-20th centuries. The life and scientific work of Z.Asgerli, who occupies a unique place in Azerbaijani literary criticism, is covered to the extent that it can fit into the framework of the article.
