Abstract

This article provides a detailed study of the playing techniques of the Azerbaijani tar, focusing primarily on the left-hand finger techniques. Although references to these techniques can be found in a number of
sources, precise methodological explanations and comprehensive accounts of their performance practice are
often lacking. Another crucial issue concerns their representation in notation. While some authors propose certain systems of musical symbols, others leave the interpretation of the notated text entirely to the performer’s
discretion. Moreover, recently composed works for the tar rarely include instructions regarding the application
of specific performance techniques. The present study seeks to clarify these problems. For this purpose, it
draws upon tar technical features in detail. Subsequently, the issue of notating these techniques is considered
with reference to the system of symbols already established in international music notation.
