Abstract

The past tense form of the verb in the Arabic literary language, as is known, denotes an action that was performed before the time of speaking. Whether the execution of the work is finished or not is clarified only within the text. The simple past tense is used to express narrative past tense. The past tense form in Arabic expresses the future tense when used in sentences expressing desire. Despite the use of the past tense in proverbs, sayings and wise words, they belong to all tenses. In very rare cases, the past tense form in Arabic indicates that the event happened in the past and that it is ongoing during the conversation.
