The Republic of Azerbaijan in the 90s of the last century, after independence, significant changes
occurred in the social, political, economic and cultural spheres of our country, interest in literature, culture,
history appeared, and international relations developed in certain areas. From this point of view, the problem
of literary translation in Azerbaijani literary studies has recently become a more urgent and necessary
problem, an independent field of scientific research.
There is no doubt, translation, as the most important factor in access to science and knowledge, is the main
means of communication between peoples and countries. This process is not only the replacement of one text
with another, but also various kinds of cultural movements and presenting to the reader extensive
information about the writer’s work. As above-mentioned, the role of literary translation in the development of Russian-Azerbaijani literary
relations is undeniable. The translation of the pearls of the Great Russian classics into the modern
Azerbaijani literary language is regarded as an encyclopedia of the art of translation and is of great
importance. The works by A.S.Pushkin, M.Y.Lermontov, N.V.Gogol, I.S.Turgenev, A.S.Griboyedov,
F.M.Dostoevsky, L.N.Tolstoy, A.P.Chekhov and other Russian writers of the 19th century translated into
Azerbaijani are considered real classic examples.
Nikolai Vasilyevich Gogol was one of the founders of the leading Russian realist literature of the 19th
century. In his works, he sharply criticized the bad aspects of the serf system, which was hostile to the
people, and mercilessly exposed the dark forces that hindered the progress and development of the Russian
society and people. The artistic images created by N.V.Gogol, which reflect the truths of Russian life with an
incomparable artistry, are very vivid, typical, bright and powerful.
Gogol’s realism had a very positive effect on the development of critical realism in Azerbaijani literature.
His works were translated into Azerbaijani language a long time ago, but unfortunately, these first
translations have not reached us.
