The role of translation in the study of European literature in Azerbaijani philological thought of the first half of the 20th century

Abstract

The article is devoted to the role of translation in the study of European literature in
Azerbaijani literary studies. Although the translations from European literature in Azerbaijan was
founded at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, a new period of
growth in the development of the art of literary translation coincided with the 20s and 30s of the
20th century. It is true that there are a large number of poetry and prose works among the
translations made during this period which are promoting the ideas of socialism, but the most
valuable works of European and world literature were translated into our language at this specific
period. Mikayil Rafili, Jafar Jabbarli, Mirza Ibrahimov, Jabbar Majnunbayov, Mammad Arif,
Beydulla Musayev, Jahanbakhish, who enriched our literary treasure by translating world literature
in the first half of the 20th century, should be especially mentioned. Thanks to them that
Azerbaijani readers became familiar with European literature and the works of its representatives.
