COMMENTARY AND LITERARY TREATISE GENRES IN AZERBAIJANI LITERARY CRITICISM

Ancient and medieval Azerbaijani literary-aesthetic thought developed in different directions. One of these directions is the works written by professional critics in the genres of commentaries and literary treatises. In those works, certain opinions were expressed about issues such as the word and its power, literary talent, the ability to express original ideas, the relationship of art to life, artistic method, content and form at the level allowed by the literary-theoretical opinion of that time. Commentary and literary treatise genres are also included in the classic forms of Azerbaijani literary criticism.
The literal meaning of interpretation is to explain, clarify, explain, declare, as a term of literary studies, it means that explains the meaning of the written and oral text, the meaning of words and phrases that are difficult to understand. The commentators who clarify any work for the readers in parts, along with the explanation of the text, also shared their opinions on issues related to literary studies, and sometimes gave space to debates with other commentators.
Although the tradition of writing commentary in Western literature dates back to antiquity, the foundation of this genre in the East was laid in the 10th century. In Azerbaijani literary studies, Khatib Tabrizi and Yusif Khoylu were recognized as prominent representatives of the commentary genre.
Literary treatises are also important in terms of studying the development stages of criticism, theory and literary studies in the Middle Ages, and the main directions of scientific-theoretical thinking. In its development, the works such as “Meyarul-eshar”, “Asasul-iqtibas” by Nasiruddin Tusi, “Anisul-ushshag”, “Hadayiqul-haqaiq” by Sharafeddin Rami, “Al wafi fi tadadul qawafi” by Assar Tabrizi, “Risaleyi-jami-mukhtasar” by Vahid Tabrizi played an important role.
