Abstract

The article is dedicated to the issue of painting in the Postmodern era within the context of the Azerbaijani school of painting. The article consistently highlights the characteristic features of Postmodernist painting in global practice as a whole and in the works of Azerbaijani artists in particular. The author focuses on the analysis of the paintings by Aida Mahmudova and Tora Agabekova. In each case, the individual features of the authors’ approaches to contemporary oilpainting are noted. For instance, Aida Mahmudova’s works not only reflect the external world but also serve as a metaphor for the inner state of the artist as a person exploring her identity. At the same time, viewers are given the opportunity to interpret the depicted world in their own way. Similarly, the works of Tora Agabekova clearly demonstrate such features of Postmodernist culture as irony, emotional detachment, intertextuality, polysemy, and metaphoricality.
