Libraries established in Tabriz and scientists from Tabriz

During the reign of Qazan Khan (1295-1304) in the late 13th and early 14th centuries, Tabriz was one of the largest centers of science and culture in the Near and Middle East. Qazan Khan established a specialized library called “Beyt al-Qanun” (“House of Law”) to preserve state decrees and legislative documents. The original official documents were kept in this library, and copies were sent to the provinces. In addition, Qazan Khan built another library called “Beyt alKutub” (“House of Books”) to house the growing collection of manuscripts. At the same time, the Rashidiyya (Rab-i Rashidi) town, built by Qazan Khan’s vizier Fazlullah Rashid al-Din (1247-1318) and containing 600,000 books, further increased the scientific potential of Tabriz. These centers created conditions for the activities of not only local scholars, but also specialists
from other countries. The article analyzes prominent scholars who benefited from this rich cultural environment of Tabriz, including philologist, the first textual scholar of Azerbaijan Khatib Tabrizi (1030-1109), philosopher and theologian Mevlana Muhiyiddin Mahammad
Karabakhi (died 1535), and their works preserved at the Mahammad Fuzuli Institute of Manuscripts of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences.
