The First Turkological Congress held in Baku in February 1926 was one of the cornerstones of cooperation between Turkish-speaking peoples in the fields of language, culture and science. This Congress played an important role in the formation of a common scientific and cultural policy among Turkish-speaking peoples.
More than 100 scientists and intellectuals from Azerbaijan, Turkey, Central
Asia, Crimea, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and other regions participated in the congress. The main goal of the congress was to achieve linguistic unity among Turkish-speaking peoples, create a common alphabet and lexical system, and expand the study of ancient Turkish written monuments. Representatives from different regions exchanged views on the phonetics, morphology, syntax and lexicography of the language. Among the Turkologists who actively participated in the congress were many well-known Turkologists and intellectuals. Among them, personalities such as Khalid Said Khojayev, Ruhulla Akhundov, Bekir Chobanzadeh, Ahmed Javad, Mehmet Fuat Koprulu, Zeki Velidi Toqa, Reshid Rza Nur, Sadri Maksudi Arsal made presentations on the Turkish language and culture from various aspects. Their speeches and scientific theses laid the foundation for scientific cooperation in this field that will continue for many years. In particular, the issue of transition to a common Latin script alphabet and discussions on terminological uniformity had serious impact on the language policy of modern Turkish-speaking countries.
