PECULIARITIES OF ANTITHETIC CONSTRUCTIONS IN THE AZERBAIJANI AND ENGLISH LANGUAGES

Abstract

The article is dedicated to the research of antithetic constructions in the Azerbaijani and English languages. The author points out that the main function of antithetic constructions is the conveying expressivess which is achieved by means of opposition and contrast. Antithesis is one of the widespreading stylistic means used in belleletres, everyday speech, different functional styles, in folklore language and etc. Antithesis plays a great role in proverbs and sayings. In the Azerbaijani and English languages there are met the following types of antithesis: 1) simple, consisting of one opposite pair; 2) complex (widened antithesis) – is formed by means of including of different components or attributes. This type of antithesis in the investigated material takes a majority.
