    Abstract

The Azerbaijani people have historically entered into economic, political and cultural relations with many peoples, nations and tribes, borrowing various words and expressions from them, and the vocabulary of the language has been further enriched through these borrowed words. Historical and social events and important changes in social life, as in other areas, have had an impact on toponyms. Most researchers studying toponyms have focused more on Turkish toponyms used in Azerbaijani in terms of geographical locations, and have not discussed borrowed toponyms in as much detail. Although toponyms are discussed in separate articles and scientific works, borrowed toponyms in the Azerbaijani language have not been the subject of separate research. For centuries, the Azerbaijani people have mixed with various peoples and have adopted many words and expressions from Iranian languages, such as Talysh, Persian, Arabic, Tat, and Kurdish; from Europe an languages, such as French; from Slavic languages, such as Russian; from Ibero Caucasian languages, such as Lezgi, Udin, Sakhur, Gryz, and Ingiloy; and from Mongolian. The most obvious example of this is in geographical names and toponyms. These borrowed names are more common in oikonyms, hydronyms, and oronyms.
