    Abstract

The article deals with the problems of the development of etymology in ancient times and the Middle Ages. The study analyzes the initial scientific considerations about etymology in ancient Indian linguistics and Greek linguistics. Here, a large place is given to the ideas about the etymological thought of ancient Indian and Greek philosophers, especially the Stoics. It is noted that in the works of T. Varro, one of the main representatives of Roman linguistics in the Middle Ages, an important place is also given to etymological interpretations. True, in general linguistics it is noted that the history of scientific etymology is connected with the 19th century. However, in ancient Indian and Greek linguistics, as well as in Europe in the Middle Ages, etymology was mentioned as part of grammar.
