One of the things that distinguishes an adjective from other parts of speech is that it has degree signs. An adjective, as a part of speech, expresses a quality or characteristic of an object. However, the quality and the sign are not always on the same level. In other words, the quality of an item is either normal, low, or high, which is expressed in language by various means.
The fact that an adjective has different qualities is called degree in grammar by the term "adjective degree category." The different degrees of characteristics and qualities of an object are expressed either by morphological means or by lexical and semantic means.
İn the Azerbaijani language, several lexical units that indicate the quality of being in anormal state are black, red, brown, yellow, blue, white, etc. It serves as a basic tool for creating different degrees of an adjective. To determine the quality and characteristic of an object, ordinary and primary adjectives take various grammatical forms or must be used with certain lexical units as auxiliary means. The adjective and its degree signs are the product of a long period of historical development and have gradually undergone qualita
tive changes. In other words, some degree signs were simplified or lost their effectiveness, while others became active at later periods.
