Abstract

The article deals with the relationship between etymology and linguistic paleontology. The author concludes that data on linguistic paleontology can serve as a valuable resource for etymology. There is a great need for innovation in modern etymological research. In contrast to traditional etymology, the application of new paradigms in etymological research is becoming one of the most priority issues of the globalized world linguistics. Paleolinguistics, psycholinguistics and cognitive linguistics lay the foundation for the development of new directions of etymological research. Analyzing the theoretical aspects of etymology leads to the conclusion that there are still problematic issues in general and theoretical linguistics that are still waiting to be solved in this field. When etymological studies are approached from the aspects of genetics, cognitive linguistics, ethnology, linguistic paleontology and archeology, the complex scientific results of etymological studies become more reliable and convincing. In short, it is possible to obtain more reliable and convincing facts based on the multidisciplinary integration of linguistics, archeology, paleontology and ethnology in etymological research.
