Abstract

The article is devoted to the expression of deontic modality in non-verbal categories in the
language. Modality which is related to human thinking, consciousness, psychology, speech, language
is treated as a philosophical, logical, psychological and linguistic category. Modality is expressed in
different levels of language. Linguists who study modality as a language category have different
views on the means of expression of modality. It is clear from the works written on modality that
linguists connect the expression of this notion in the language with the moods of the verb, modal
verbs, modal words, particles, intonation, etc. and consider the category of mood, modal verbs as the
main means of expression of this notion. However, the article notes that modality is expressed not
only by the verb category, but also by other linguistic means. In the article, especially in the
expression of deontic modality in the language, the role of language units such as particles, some
adverbs, intonation, etc. is studied. It is concluded that these units of language, which express deontic modality, act not as the auxiliary means, but as the main means in the expression of this notion.
Because when these language units are removed from a given sentence or text, this notion is not
expressed. From this it becomes clear that non-verbal language units also play a main role in the
expression of modality in language as a verb category.
