Abstract

The concept of "language game" in the Azerbaijani language is called "word game", "pun" and
was not the object of special research. In foreign linguistics, a lot of information has been given about
this phenomenon, and research has been conducted on the works of individual writers, advertisements
and newspaper texts. The language game uses the resources of all layers of language, and this phenomenon manifests itself at the phonetic, lexical, morphological, syntactic levels. This includes phonetic, lexical, morphological deformations, unusualness of meaning and form, interruption of lexical
combinations, puns, precedent texts, occasionalisms, etc. The functions of a language game are classified differently according to genre. Writers use language games for a variety of purposes, mostly to
create comedy, jokes, irony, and humor. This deliberately created event in language reveals the word
creativity of writers, their ability to create new words, occasionalisms, and it is associated with expressiveness and pragmatism. Language play cannot be equated with speech errors, as this is a deliberate infringement of the norm by the author. Language play appears more commonly in paronyms,
homonyms, polysemous words, altered forms of phraseologisms, children's words, the use of imitation
words, occasionalisms created by the author, and so on.
