Abstract

Shusha is not only the name of a city in Azerbaijan. It is also the name of one of the elite dynasties of ancient Western Asia.
The first city Shusha was established in Elam, in the southeast of the Zagros Mountains. That city was called Susa, Suza in ancient sources. Suz is the name of the city Suziana in the Greek texts.
The oracles of the temple Shusha had the title in-Shushinak. Shusha was the sixth biggest city of
Elam in the 18th century BC. It got bigger after it became a capital. The population of the city was 45
thousand in BC. It meant being a metropolis for that time.
In the 6th century BC, the Acaemenids destroyed the state Elam. A part of the population move
to the mountains. They established the state Khazinadars in the fortresses they took shelter. That state
had been remained until the arrival of Alexander of Macedon.
The most warlike generations moved to the foot of the Caucasus Mountains. They built the cities
Shusha and Barda between Albania and Iberia. Evliya Chelebi (17th century) had seen the ruins of
those cities.
The patriarchs of the Shusha dynasty had the title Er Shusha. Er Shusha I ruled the Iberian people in the 3rd century AD and Er Shusha II in the 5th century.
Er Shusha II became Christian. He summoned Mesrop Mashtots and ordered him to create The
Shusha alphabet. The Georgians claimed that the alphabet mentioned above was the first Georgian
alphabet. In fact, it was the Shusha alphabet. At that time, the Bagrations from the Judean origin who
were the ancestors of the modern Georgians had not come to Caucasus yet.
The generations of Shusha kept fighting against the Bagrations and they moved to the north-west
of the city Batum in 1117. They built the fortress Shushaeti, i.e. the land of Shusha and took shelter
there.
In the beginning of the 20th century, academician Marr went on the scientific trip to the region
called Shavshat today. According to his writings, the old people of Shavshat remembered that they
had moved here from Georgia. However, they could not speak Georgian. They spoke in a language
similar to the Turkic languages.
I suggest restoring the name Shusha, the historical name of the city Shavshat. I suggest that the
cities Shusha in Azerbaijan, Turkey and Italy became sister cities. If this idea was realised, the Turan
union would extend its territory, become much stronger and invincible.
