GENEALOGICAL AND LOCAL NICKNAMES AND THEIR ETHIMOLOGY IN SHAMAKHI DIALECT OF THE AZERBAIJANI LANGUAGE

Genealogical nicknames in dialects and accents of the Azerbaijani language have been studied
under different names. In dialects and accents, tribe means “ashiret”, “jimilet”, “ejdad”, “ojakh”,
“kok”, “mehle”, “agraba”, “nesil”, “taifa”, “tokhum”, “oimakh”, “ tire”, “soy”, “boluy”, “jom”, “tabun”, “shakka”, “gobey”, “joga” and so on words are used.
In the Shamakhi dialects of the Azerbaijani language, instead of tribe, generation there are more
tabah, mahalla, urug, tira and so on words are used.
Various information about local nicknames used in Shamakhi dialects can be found in historical,
geographical, artistic and journalistic books. Historical, ethnographic and linguistic research works
have given some information about local nicknames in Shamakhi, and they have been involved in
etymological research. Some of the quarters mentioned in historical sources still remain: Juish quarter,
Minekhor, Gushchular, Saritorpak, Padars, Arabs, Shehidler (Martyrs) and so on.
Local nicknames are observed not only in the center of Shamakhi, but also in its villages.
Local nicknames used in Shamakhi can be classified differently according to their characteristics: those of tribal origin; named according to their geographical location; named after a representative of a generation or according to a certain characteristic.
The collection and study of ancestral nicknames used in the Shamakhi dialects is relevant in
terms of studying the history of the Azerbaijani language. Although this issue has been studied from a
historical and ethnographic point of view, it has not been involved in linguistic research.
