Abstract

The article is devoted to the cohesion of the text. The emergence and development of text theory is associated with
rhetoric and philology. In this regard, the article clarifies the concepts of rhetoric and philology. Rhetoric and philology
study the text from different aspects. Two methodologies of studying the text have been developed from ancient times.
When the text is generated, rhetoric aimed to persuade the audience of the text and philology aimed to understand the
text. Since the middle of the twentieth century, the study of the text has emerged as both a scientific and a practical
necessity and as a result, numerous studies have been conducted in this area.
In text theory, there are two main categories that ensure textual integrity - cohesion and coherence. This content
also serves to indicate the connection between the components that make up the text in linguistics. Cohesion learns how
a text is organized, not what it means. Cohesion can also be called a formal-grammatical analysis of the text. Cohesion
is the internal connection of the text. Coherence, on the other hand, is an external connection and a pragmatic carrier.
Although cohesion is more formal than coherence, it determines the choice of language means of expressing the
author's views. Thus, cohesion ensures the formal-grammatical connection of the text. Coherence covers the semanticpragmatic features of the text. Although cohesion and coherence are different aspects of the text, they ensure textual
integrity and coherence.
The article shows the types of cohesion in the text identified by M.Hallidey and R.Hasan, who made great
contributions to the development of text theory, and explains them with selected examples from the literature.
In addition, the article touches upon the views about the cohesion of the text by academician K.M.Abdullayev and
prof. A.Mammadov's approaches on the role of conjunctions in the cohesion of the text and explains with examples.
