Abstract

The article focuses on the role of facts of dialects and subdialects in the study of ethnolinguistic processes in the
territory of Azerbaijan. In the eastern group dialects and subdialects of the Azerbaijani language, borrowed words,
which have a certain degree of functionality, provide important facts for studying not only the processes of language
contacts, but also the history of the languages in contact. The results of the study of the interaction of the Azerbaijani
and some Iranian languages at the level of both the literary language and dialects show that many phonetic, grammatical
and semantic elements of the ancient and medieval periods of the Turkic languages have been preserved in the Iranian
languages. In the languages of non-Turkic peoples living in the territory of Azerbaijan, a large number of borrowed
lexical units characteristic of the earlier periods of the Azerbaijani language, but now becoming archaic or not used in
the literary language, have been preserved in an unchanged form. In the words borrowed into Azerbaijani dialects and
subdialects, the opposite can be observed. In the dialects and subdialects of the eastern group of the Azerbaijani language, words borrowed from one or another Iranian language have retained a number of phonetic features characteristic
of the group of languages to which this language is the source of borrowing.
