NOTES ON THE TONYUKUK INSCRIPTION

Abstract

As a vise man Tonyukuk became a vizier during the second Goyturk khaganate. The monument in his honor is
called the Tonyukuk monuments. The monument was written by Tonyukuk while he was stil alive. The Tonyukuk
monument, which differs from other Orkhon monuments in terms of language and style, was written in a simple vernacular. The monuments was discovered in 1897 by Y.N. Clements. Read and translated by V.Tomsen, V.Radlof,
S.Malov, T.Tekin and A. Radjabli,. Due to the announcement of 2020 as the “Year of Tonyukuk” UNESCO, this monument was re-read by us and translated into Azerbaijani. Compared to previous readings, this reading attempts to correct previous shortcomings. The vocabulary of the monument is very simple and rich. Thus, here, Tonyukuk, Bilge Tonyukukch Ilterish khagan, Kuni Saɳun, Kapagan and others, names of historical figures, Chugay Kuz, Kara Kumug,
Ötüken, Togla, Taluy Ügüz, Altun yış, Kögmen, Anı, Ağ Termel, etc. such as toponyms, tabışğan, deer animal names,
tabğaç, türk (sir), oghuz, on ok, kırgız, az, az yerı as historical ethnonyms, şad, kağan, boyla baga tarkan, bilge, alp and
other titles and positions, yırgaru, önreki, kuriyaku, aɳaru such as words prove richness of the Turkish language in the
VIII century with the historical facts.
