Abstract

This article is devoted to the history of the use of punctuation in writing, provides information about the
functional-semantic typology of punctuation, expresses a subjective attitude to the study of punctuation. The first
punctuation marks were used in ancient Greek linguistics, and that punctuation was used in ancient Turkish written
monuments, including Orkhan-Yenisei inscriptions. The article notes that punctuation was first used in ancient Greek
times by Aristophanes, the owner of the Library of Alexandria, when preparing the works of ancient Greek writers and
poets for publication. The main reasons for the emergence of punctuation in the study are the development of rhetoric in
the ancient Greek period, the emergence of book printing, the publication of religious books.
