Abstract

Azerbaijani poetry has reached the peak of world poetry just with the works by Nizami Ganjavi. Although the
great poet wrote in Persian, this does not change the fact that he is of Azerbaijani-Turkic origin. Nizami, who presented
five beautiful works to the world literature, which is “Khamsa”, a rich treasure of the Oriental culture, gifted
immortality to the Azerbaijani literature.
In his works, even in the twelfth century, the poet presented the names and astronomical and astrological features
of the seven planets, twelve constellations of the zodiac, and many known celestial bodies, and used them in his works
as descriptions, parables, and metaphors to introduce and describe his heroes. One of these celestial bodies is the Moon.
Nizami also described its hemispherical, crescent and full moon forms in his works.
The study of Nizami Ganjavi’s works reveals that his poems are rich in onomastic units and that the toponyms,
anthroponyms, zoonyms, etc. described in them indicate the importance of examining each of those notions as a
separate research object. Their study can shed light on the history of our language (the Azerbaijani language), as well as
a number of dark corners of those periods when the poet lived. Obviously, there is no need to explain the importance of
language materials in revealing the dark pages of history.
