ON ERRORS IN IDENTIFYING PHONEMES OF A FOREIGN LANGUAGE

Abstract

The article is devoted to errors in identifying phonemes of a foreign language.
The phonological system of each language is like a kind of sieve through which all
spoken words pass. The "sieves" system is different in every language. We learn
the system of the mother tongue. When we listen to a foreigner's speech and analyze it, we inevitably use the "phonological filter" of our native language, which is
common to us. However, since our "sieve" is not suitable for a foreign language, a
large number of mistakes and misunderstandings arise. We do not interpret the errors of the foreign language correctly phonologically, because we pass them
through the "phonological control" of our mother tongue. The examples prove that
the so-called "foreign accent" style of speech does not depend on whether a foreigner can pronounce any sound correctly, but rather on the fact that he misperceives this sound. Such a misperception of a certain sound of any foreign language
is related to the difference between the phenological structures of the speaker of the
foreign language and the mother tongue. Pronunciation mistakes in the speech of a
foreigner are in most cases completely like other typical mistakes. In every Hungarian language, the difference between male and female speech comes naturally.
However, this difference exists for men at the lexical level, not at the grammatical
level.
