Abstract

Tracing the phonosemantic and morphonological development history of root
morphemes creates a complete picture of the proforms and archetypes of any Turkish language words. Until now, if we do not take into account the etymological dictionaries related to the root words of the Turkic languages, few studies have been
carried out in a systematic, generalizing direction. Since a general, perfect etymological dictionary of Turkish languages has not been prepared, there are certain
shortcomings and gaps in the researches about the proforms of Turkish word roots.
Only the root words of individual Turkic languages (Kazakh, Kyrgyz, Turkish)
have been studied, the general development directions of Turkish word roots have
not been fully determined, and Turkish word roots have not been involved in comprehensive comparative-typological studies. Therefore, there is a great need for
new reconstructions and etymological studies in Turkology. Sound symbolism was
important in the creation of early words. The article examines the role of sound
symbolism in the formation of root words.
