POLYSEMANTICITY IN THE CUMAN LEXICON OF “CODEX CUMANICUS”

Abstract

The Cuman dictionary of the Codex Cumanicus, believed to have been written in the late 13th
and mid-14th centuries, contains a dictionary and texts related to many aspects of the cultural and
daily life of the Cumans. Examining the language materials of this dictionary from different
perspectives is of great importance in Azerbaijani Turkology and linguistics.
This article examines the polysemous words used in the language of the Codex Cumanicus. As it
is known, polysemy is a language process that plays an important role in enriching the vocabulary of
Turkish languages. The article explains the process of meaning diversification, process of narrowing
and expanding meaning, the process of gaining new meanings of a word, in short, the polysemy
process in the Cuman language, in the example of polysemy words used in the Cuman dictionary of
Codex Cumanicus.
