Literary tendencies in the Tanzimat period

Abstract

In the different periods of history when literature is being reformulated, language also must be changed. For this reason many scholars and writers do their best to simplify the language in Tanzi-mat period. With the Westernization movement, Turkish society has experienced important changes in social, cultural and literary life as in many areas. In this process gaining acceleration through Tanzimat, Turkish literature entered into a renewal process and the translations made from the West has played an important role in shaping this new literature. In this period contemporary Western prose fiction, drama and journalism, both in realism and in romantic developed in parallel. The au-thor draws attention to the facts that, despite all the, Western-oriented humanitarian thinking first manifested itself in the literary life of Tanzimat. In other words, Ottoman society, familiar with Eu-ropean culture and socio-political life only through literature, gradually began to levitate it in its da-ily life. It is also noted that this political and cultural influence was so powerful that in a short peri-od of time the ottomans. Along with the preservation of their nationality, were gradually integrated into a progressive-democratic Western culture.
