As a result of the dissolution of the Soviet Union in December 1991, all former Soviet republics became independent states. After gaining independence, Azerbaijan began to establish diplomatic relations with many countries around the world, including Belarus on June 11, 1993.
Over the years, Belarus and Azerbaijan have formed strong and friendly relations. In February 2006, the Embassy of Belarus in Azerbaijan was opened in Baku, and in August of the same year, the Embassy of Azerbaijan in Belarus was established. In 2009, the official visit of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev to the Republic of Belarus took place from November 11 to 13.
Interparliamentary ties have also developed between the republics. For example, the Azerbaijani Parliament has a bilateral working group on relations with Belarus, and the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus has a working group on relations with Azerbaijan.
Over the years, strong trade, economic, cultural, and scientific ties have been established between the two republics. Openness, trust, friendship, and mutual assistance are at the heart of Azerbaijani-Belarusian relations. The strategic partnership between our countries allows for close, mutually beneficial cooperation in both economic and humanitarian spheres.
The political dialogue between Azerbaijan and Belarus has been continuous. Since the establishment of diplomatic relations, 17 high-level visits have been conducted. Azerbaijan and Belarus also share close positions in the international arena. The priority of the foreign policy pursued by both countries is, first and foremost, the interests of their peoples. International cooperation between the two republics is carried out within the framework of many international organizations.
The mutual desire to expand and deepen cooperation is based on the common strategic vision of the heads of state and the top leadership of both countries, who consistently pursue a course of comprehensive national development. Thus, both Azerbaijan and Belarus are implementing a growth model based on the effective use of rich domestic potential and the maximization of benefits from international cooperation. In other words, both Baku and Minsk consider the development of foreign trade, trade turnover, and industrial cooperation as effective mechanisms for strengthening and modernizing national economies.
On the political level, both countries proceed from similar and overlapping visions of the world order, giving priority to ensuring the rule of international law and legality. The mutual support provided by Azerbaijan and Belarus during political contacts, and within the framework of the UN, OSCE, Council of Europe, and other international organizations, is a clear indicator of the closeness of the approaches of the two countries.
Thus, it is safe to say that the strategic partnership between our countries, supported by friendly relations between our peoples, will continue to develop further in all areas, including political, economic, and humanitarian aspects.
