Moral Evolution of the Characters in Tariq Bugra’s Novel “Kuchuk Aga”

Abstract

Tariq Bugra is one of the well-known writers of Turkish literature of the Republican period. T. Bugra is one of the writers who transmits important events of the history of Turkey in his works. Bugra’s novel “Kuchuk aga” should not be left out when the novels about the events of the National Struggle period in Turkish literature are concerned. The book, published in 1963, deals with the events that took place in Akshahar, a town in Anatolia where the writer was born and raised. The novel tells the story of how Kuvayi-Milliye was formed and expanded in the rear during the War of liberation.
The purpose of this writing is to examine the characters İstanbullu Hoca and Colak Saleh, the main characters of the “Kuchuk aga”, and to draw attention to their spiritual change after those events. To achieve this purpose the author grounds on T. Bugra’s novel “Kuchuk aga” as well as articles and materials written about this novel.
After a brief account of Bugra’s place and work in Turkish literature, the author’s thoughts on the novel are being discussed. The following stages, however, mainly deals with the moral evolution ofcharacters, namely, Colak Saleh and Istanbullu Hoca.
