    Abstract

In the worldview of the Azerbaijani people, water is not merely a natural element but a symbol of life and sanctity. This article explores the formation, essence, and functional character-istics of the Water Tuesday (Su charshenbe) and the water cult in Azerbaijani folklore. Water is presented as a symbol of life, purity, abundance, and holiness within the nation's belief system. Rituals and ceremonies associated with Water Tuesday - such as jumping over water, "silent wa-ter" (lal su), water fortune-telling, making intentions by water, and other beliefs - reflect the faith in the purifying and protective power of water. The article analyzes the motif of water in folklore samples, particularly in the epics "The Book of Dede Korkut" and "Koroghlu" as well as in prov-erbs, blessings, and dream interpretations. It is demonstrated that water is perceived not only as a physical substance but also as a sacred entity carrying mythological and spiritual significance. Consequently, the water cult remains a vital component of the ancient belief system and spiritual world of the Azerbaijani people, maintaining its relevance to this day.
