In the article, the author analyzes the sources of Nizami Ganjavi’s work “Leyli and Majnun”, he draws attention to two sources: First, folklore, especially oral traditions and stories; Secondly, written literature - handwritten books written in Arabic and Persian. In particular, it is emphasized that the debate about which of them predominates continues until recent years, and researchers summarize their opinions mainly in four areas: a) Although they do not completely deny that some motifs come from oral folk literature, they claim that Nizami wrote the work based on written sources (Bertels E.E., Krachkovsky I.Yu., Zhirmunsky V.A. et al. ); b) are suspicious of folklore (Aliev G., Aliev R., etc.); c) they ignore the connection of the work with written sources and allow the poet to use only folklore sources (Shirvani Y., Khalisbeyli T., Sasani H., etc.); d) They suggest that Nizami attaches equal importance to both sources, turning both folk legends and written books into building materials for the composition of his work (Arasli H., Azadeh R., Bakhshalieva G., Yusifov H., etc.)
